SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) – While Western Mass. Electric customers may be seeing a decrease in one portion of their monthly bill, they should expect an increase starting next week. Starting Monday, based on a rate approved by the Mass. Department of Public Utilities, residential customers will see a one cent per kilowatt-hour increase in their supply charge, from 7.315 cents to 8.317 cents. With the increase, the average residential customer, using 500 kilowatt-hours per month, will see their bill increase a little over $6.00, from $83.25 to $89.60. Small commercial and industrial customers will see an increase from 7.568 cents per kilowatt-hour to 7.775 cents per kilowatt-hour. The supply rate, which can change twice a year on July 1 and January 1, is a cost passed directly to the customer from Western Mass. Electric’s suppliers and WMECo experiences no profit from the fee. WMECo says that this year’s supply rate increase is due, in part, to the rising cost of fuel power generators use to produce electricity. The July 1 increase comes shortly after WMECo increase comes shortly after the company enacted a decrease in the delivery charges for customers. I am an independent associate with Viridian Energy.
