Severins earliest recorded comic-book work is coloring EC Comics A Moon, a Girl... in Romance #9 (Oct. 1949), when she had been recruited to work there (at EC) by her older brother John. She spent time as a colorist at EC and later, at Marvels predecessor Atlas, for most of the 1950s but otherwise held down a number of office jobs outside of comics. At the dawn of the Silver Age, Marie once again found herself working in Marvels production department. Severin recalled in 2001 that when Esquire magazine requested an artist to illustrate a story on the college drug culture, Marvel production manager Sol Brodsky offered Severin rather than one of the regular artists, who were on deadline. Her illustration for the magazine led Marvels editor-in-chief Stan Lee to assign her the feature Doctor Strange in Strange Tales, replacing Bill Everett. Along with that came a number of alliterative nicknames (Merry Marie, Mirthful Marie) and the start of a Will Eisner Hall-of-Fame Award-winning career. Im planning a separate album posting for her work with brother John on King Kull, to me one of THE singular artistic achievements in comics.
