So, I just passed an Islamic anti Israel demonstration. Was kinda scary thinking that if my skin was transparent and they had seen the former Israeli soldier it wouldnt have ended well. It reminded me of the first protest I went to. I remember there being a protest against the operation at that time (Cast Lead, 2009). There was also an anti protest protest, protesting the fact that people are protesting against the war. I didnt really want to go, but Inbar Topaz talked me into it. The peace protesters had Red communist flags, and flags of Palestine. I remember wondering why people who believe that the operation should be stopped have to march under the banner of Communists and Palestinians. The demonstration was aggressive, and from the moment I saw it I knew I wanted nothing to do with it. Then there was the anti protest protest, where they sang songs about Israel, called for the death of Arabs in general, and leftists because why not. They had Israeli flags. I remember wondering what gave them the right to march under the Israeli flag anymore than their opposition. Some years later, I was volunteering with Meretzs election campaign. The campaign ended with a demonstration, marching with flags in the streets of Tel Aviv. I remember how I hated the flags. Basically, a flag to me represents everything that is wrong with causes that represent a collection of people. Once someone has a flag, theyve basically lost my sympathy*. The irony is - in that protest, years ago, with the operation? I hated both sides so much I dont even remember which side I was originally going to root for. * The only possible exception is perhaps the pride flag.
