So Im reading Theory of the Avant-Garde by Peter Bruger. And he makes an interest argument....that because many works of art are idealised interpretations of society or the human condition (keeping in mind that idealising society implies that current factual or real society is wretched in his eords) then it ironically prevents the interpreter from taking any action. Example: we are able to project ourselves or at least experience the triumph (which is technically nothing but an aural illusion) of Beethovens third symphony and that is enough for us to feel more whole, without realizing that feeling of wholeness is made possible only by the lack thereof while NOT projecting ourselves onto some kind of metaphysical art, whether it is one of joy or sadness, discourse or agreement. We therefore come away from the work feeling better, but with no motivation to change that which we feel better from. He applies it more to visual and literary art but I think it carries over well....not sure what to think anymore...looking for comments! Michael Lanci Scott Miller Robin Morace
