So were up to $17.5 trillion in USA debt (not counting city & state, which adds about another 5 trillion). Ive seen a lot of attempts to describe this per capita, but I wanted to think about it more like bitcoin (or a stock). There is a finite number of bitcoins or stock shares, and the amount you have represents a part of the whole. So how many dollars are there? This is a confusing question, because currency only represents an estimated 2% of the dollars that exist because of digital currency (some would disagree with that term, but essentially there are place holders for money, regardless of whether or not they are digital or technically currency). Read this. Its eye-opening (spoiler alert, there is more debt than there are dollars). money.howstuffworks/how-much-money-is-in-the-world.htm
