So, when I had my lumpectomy last October, my surgeon also removed - TopicsExpress

So, when I had my lumpectomy last October, my surgeon also removed 5 lymph nodes from my arm pit. Two of which tested positive for cancer. Since lymph nodes were removed, I have to be extra cautious of lymphedema, which is a build-up of fluid in the lymphatic system in the affected area. Once you have lymphedema its incurable. However, it is treatable, and the sooner you treat it the better the outcome will be. Well, radiation can cause swelling and/or lymphedema. Unfortunately, I noticed the swelling over the weekend in my chest and collar bone area. Fortunately, it hasnt gravitated down my arm. To treat lymphedema, I am suppose to wear a compression sleeve when I am active, doing any lifting, and when doing housework/yard-work. I also need to wear it when I travel, and especially so by airplane. The elevation change will definitely cause a flare-up. Im also suppose to avoid foods that are high in salt, and I need to drink lots of water. I also go and get a massage from an occupational therapist to move the fluid over to the left side of my body where that lymphatic system is working to full capacity. Because of lymphedema, I cant have my blood drawn or blood pressure taken on my right arm. I also need to be very careful of any cuts, scrapes, or infection getting in my right arm. Ugh! I hoped that I could get rid of the cancer and just move on. Obviously, cancer and its effects will be a part of me for the rest of my life! However, what I got out of this is do limited housework and have frequent massages. :)
