(Songdo, Republic of Korea, 21 November 2014) – The Government of Canada has joined other nations in pledging to the Green Climate Fund, committing CAD $300 million to the Fund shortly following its first Pledging Conference in Berlin, Germany. The announcement, made hours after the Berlin meeting, brings total pledges of contributions to the Green Climate Fund close to US$ 9.6 billion equivalent, provided by 22 countries. “Canada’s significant pledge is well timed — it promptly implements Prime Minister Harpers announcement of his countrys intention to contribute, and demonstrates that an increasing number of countries are coming forward to invest in the Green Climate Fund,” said Héla Cheikhrouhou, Executive Director of the Fund. “With one week to go before the Lima Climate Change Conference kicks off, countries have a unique window of opportunity to join in, and build further on this very positive momentum.” In a press release issued by Environment Canada, Minister of the Environment Leona Aglukkaq said the Canadian Government’s funding pledge demonstrates its “... commitment to establish a fair, effective international agreement in Paris next year that includes binding obligations on all major emitters,” adding that “[t]he Green Climate Fund’s strong focus on helping the poorest countries with adaptation and promoting private sector investment will play a key role in addressing climate change globally.” Resource mobilization efforts of the Green Climate Fund continue beyond the Berlin Pledging Conference, with additional announcements expected by the 20th Session of the UNFCCC Conference of the Parties held in Lima, Peru, from 1 to 12 December 2014.
