Still trying to wrap my head around who would see Tom Werner as a good thing were he to (improbably) become MLB Commissioner. OTOH, Im reading about how Franklin Pierce became President, and I am perhaps too easily given to pessimism as a result. Suffice to say, the man who blasted the Padres to the foundations to little point needs to be remembered for that. His placement with the Red Sox, agreeable to some, might be considered an after-effect of one of St. Buds miracles: The great franchise switcheroo that simultaneously enriched Jeffrey Loria and the other co-conspirators, put John Henry in Boston while keeping another, wealthier yet less tractable non-Selig selection out of the ownership circle, for the low, low cost of stealing a team from the people in Montreal. But suggesting that redounds to Werners credit is, at best, an act of generosity to a man already endowed with good fortune.
