THE BORNEO CRINGE Readers may be interested in this discussion on how the Scots are approaching their independence referendum on 18 September 2014. The writer E. Allen Campbell comments on the variety of reasons why some people are against Scottish independence: As for the Scottish functionality, those who are against independence have several different and varying reasons. Nonetheless, a central issue is their fear of governing and political ability on the world stage. In Scotland, they call this phenomenon the Scottish cringe. The cringe is the fear some Scots have about a sense of inability to run their lives or govern themselves without help from Westminster. This is the same argument which is often raised with the subject of Sabah Sarawak independence. Those against independence will say Sabah/Sarawak are not able to govern or defend themselves if they left Malaysia. They were saying this 50 years ago- so if that I true we have not progressed at all. The other side of the coin is that we developed a “dependence mindset”. This is most clearly expressed in the yearly budget drama of Sabah and Sarawak complaining about not receiving sufficient funds for “development”. This also begs the question raised in the slogan independence in Malaysia as to whether Sabah and Sarawak actually achieved independence in Malaysia? If they are really independent they would not be part of another country. Readers will find many of the arguments in this article very familiar and applicable to our situation.
