THIS DAY IN MISSOURI HISTORY - • March 7, 1808 – Wayman Crow was born on this day. He was a successful merchant who founded the seminary which became Washington University. He also chartered two railroads and the Mercantile Library. • March 7, 1815 – James Callaway and three of his men were killed in a confrontation with Indians along the Loutre River. (near present day Mineola, MO) Callaway was the grandson of Daniel Boone and Callaway County is named for him. • March 7, 1849 – Many of Missouri’s most important pioneers and leaders are buried in the Bellefontaine Cemetery which was started on this date. • March 7, 1861 – On this day a brewery supply salesman, Adolphus Busch married Lilly Anheuser whose father owned the Bavarian Brewery and the rest is history. • March 7-8, 1862 – The Battle of Pea Ridge at the Missouri-Arkansas border decimated the power of Confederate forces in Missouri. • March 7, 1911 – The new DeChenne Aeroplane crashed at Joplin on this day. The pilot, Ed Wilson, escaped with injuries. TRIVIA: Ed Wilson’s rudder wire broke and the plane became unbalanced. As it fell, he climbed out on the rods, wires, and canvas that comprised the plane and balanced the machine as it descended. Wilson’s former occupation was as a trapeze artist. • March 7, 1913 – A “tutor for the tooters” was hired and a new town band was formed in Hillsboro. They hoped to soon be playing sweet tunes for their tootsie wootsies. • March 7, 1980 – Workers wrapped a gigantic yellow ribbon around the top of the McDonnell Planetarium (St. Louis) in remembrance of the hostages in Iran.
