Tezcatlipoca and Quetzalcoatl fought Tlaltecuhtli, the - TopicsExpress

Tezcatlipoca and Quetzalcoatl fought Tlaltecuhtli, the world-beast. During the battle, Tezcatlipoca lost a foot to the monsters gaping maw, but this gave Quetzalcoatl the opening he needed to slay it. Tezcatlipoca replaced his foot with a serpent, and the two gods stretched out Tlaltecuhtlis body and made the earth. Quetzalcoatl became the sun, and ruled over a peaceful world. But Tezcatlipoca grew jealous, and took the sun down. Then Tezcatlipoca became the sun, but dark as he was he could only give a half-light, and his world was dark and dreary until Quetzalcoatl brought it to a merciful end. Then Tlaloc was the sun, but Tezcatlipoca tricked Tlalocs wife into sleeping with Tezcatlipoca, and in grief and fury Tlaloc burned his world to cinders. Then Chalchiuhtlicue was the sun, but Tezcatlipoca got her to cry, and unknowing she flooded the world. Then Huitzilopochtli, and/or Toniatuh, was the sun, and that is the fifth sun, and the fifth age of the world. Quetzalcoatl delved into the underworld and gathered the bones of all the creatures who had lived under the previous suns, and ground them up with corn meal, and thus made the children of maize, the humans. And that is how we came to be, and how we will continue until this age is destroyed in a great earthquake. And if that seems silly to you, now you know how I feel every time anyone mentions the Garden of Eden.
