The Club was treated to a presentation by this year’s student Sophie Sice whom we had sent on the Youth Ocean Trust sailing expedition from North Shields in August. Sophie attended with her mother Angela, and Terri Loney of Gipton Together. Terri had managed to recruit Sophie at short notice after our candidate had withdrawn. Sophie had just returned from a cheer-leading trip to the USA, had no sailing experience but obviously had a taste for adventure. Sophie arrived at the Marina to board just as the aftermath of Hurricane Bertha arrived in the North Sea. Because safety is paramount, this meant no ocean sailing on days one and two, and only five minutes at sea on day three. Much time was spent learning knots and cleaning the boat. However the bad weather also meant a trip to Wet and Wild, an ice cream factory and some arcades that are not a usual feature of the Youth Ocean Trust experience. When sailing started on day four, they sailed to the Farne Islands, where they saw puffins and dolphins, and later in the week to Amble and Blyth. Sophie had particularly enjoyed the night sail back to North Shields. We were treated to some beautiful photographs of sunsets over the North Sea taken by Sophie. Sophie reported that she had thoroughly enjoyed the experience and had made some good friends among the twelve person crew, and was keeping in touch with them. Geoff Wain gave the vote of thanks.
