The Lincoln Memorial Shrine hosts events in February By Maria Carrillo POSTED: 01/10/15 Winter is a busy time of year in the A.K. Smiley Public Library’s Special Collections division. Each February the Lincoln Memorial Shrine hosts its annual Lincoln season of events. Kicking off the revelries will be the annual Lincoln Pilgrimage on Feb. 7. Organized by the Boy Scouts of America, the annual event brings thousands of scouts, their families and supporters on a march from Redlands High School to the Redlands Bowl and the Lincoln Memorial Shrine. The pilgrimage is meant to encourage youth to dedicate themselves to the principles held by Abraham Lincoln. The pilgrimage has been a city tradition for 76 years. The 43rd annual Lincoln Shrine open house will take place the following day, when attendees will enjoy live Civil War-era music, artillery demonstrations, reenactors and activities for the whole family. The open house will also mark the unveiling of the new exhibition “1865: Triumph and Tragedy.” Focusing on the events of the final year of the American Civil War, the exhibition will discuss the decisive campaigns that brought the war to a close, the assassination of President Lincoln and the collapse of the Confederacy. “1865: Triumph and Tragedy” is the last in the series of exhibitions commemorating the sesquicentennial of the Civil War. The open house is a big hit each year, so don’t miss it. On Feb. 12, the Lincoln Shrine and University of Redlands will host the 83rd annual Watchorn Lincoln Dinner. The evening will include live music, great food and a presentation by Dan Weinberg titled “From Boyhood to Assassination: Lincoln Artifacts Whisper Their Stories.” Weinberg is the proprietor of Abraham Lincoln Book Shop Inc. in Chicago and co-author of “Lincoln’s Assassins: Their Trial and Execution.” Begun in 1932 by Lincoln Memorial Shrine founder Robert Watchorn, the Lincoln Dinner has featured some of the most prominent names in the field of Lincoln scholarship. Past speakers have included such luminaries as Carl Sandburg, James McPherson and current FCC chairman Tom Wheeler. For information or to make a reservation, contact the A.K. Smiley Public Library Heritage Room at 909-798-7632. Cost is $45 for Lincoln Memorial Association members and $55 for nonmembers. Reservations are required and space is limited. The Special Collections division continues to grow with donations for the archives, Redlands Historical Museum and Lincoln Memorial Shrine coming in to the Heritage Room. Recent donations have included the deed to Hillside Memorial Park, ceramic letters from the Mitten building, the original plaster sign from Ruby’s Sandwich Shop and many more items that bring a greater understanding of Redlands history. The effort to commemorate the centennial of World War I and its effects on Redlands and its residents continues. Redlanders are encouraged to share their family stories, photographs and objects with Special Collections staff. The Special Collections division is in the Heritage Room of the A.K. Smiley Public Library. The Heritage Room is open 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. For information, call 909-798-7632 or visit lincolnshrine.org.
