The Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI) revealed in a report released last Wednesday that the bacteria discovered in Fonterra products earlier this month was never capable of causing botulism. Fresh tests show the bacteria - which was initially thought to have been first sourced to a dirty pipe at Fonterra Hautapu - was not clostridium botulinum, but clostridium sporogenes, which can cause food to spoil. Clostridium sporogenes is not considered a food safety risk.
