The Rhino Cup is a charity polo tournament that has two main objectives. The first objective is to raise awareness in Malaysia about the critically endangered Sumatran Rhinoceros. The second objective is aid the Borneo Rhino Alliance (BORA), based in Sabah, in their efforts to breed the remaining rhinoceroses. The reason for hosting such an event stems from the dire situation that Sumatran Rhinos face today. Their population is numbered at less than 100 worldwide, with less than 20 in Sabah. The problem now is not poaching or habitat loss, but because there are so few rhinos left in any one place that they are simply not meeting and breeding in the wild. In Malaysia, the plan is to capture the last remaining Sumatran rhinos for managed breeding under natural forest. Any and all proceeds from this event will be donated to BORA for the construction of a holding center for Sumatran Rhinoceroses at Danum Valley.
