The Smithsonian is the largest museum complex in the world with a collection of over 137 million objects. To make items from the past more accessible, the Smithsonian is documenting pieces using a variety of 3-D scanners. So far they are working on documenting the Crab Nebula, complete sets of skeletons including that of naturalist Robert Kennicott, and a whale fossil graveyard in Chile, among a few others. These images are going to be used for research at the Smithsonian and for other experts around the world, but they will also be made available to the public for anyone interested in satisfying a curiosity.
