The best time we’ve ever had for $10 bucks was had yesterday at Hitsville- the Motown Museum on fabled West Grand Avenue in Detroit, MI. Although it’s heartbreaking to view the urban devastation that is laying waste to the once great Motor City, our visit and tour of Hitsville can only be described as enlightening and awe inspiring. What the creativity of Berry Gordy and co-creators like Smokey Robinson were able to squeeze out of two simple urban dwellings in the sixties will never be replicated! The birthplace of the extraordinary music of Stevie Wonder, The Temptations, Marvin Gaye, The Supremes, the Jackson Five, Smokey Robinson, The Velvettes, The Marvelettes, The Four Tops, Martha and the Vandellas, The Miracles, Jr. Walker and the All Stars, The Spinners and so many others is a trip back to a time when Motown provided much needed relief for so many young people who suffered through the horror of senseless genocide in Vietnam, the King and Kennedy Assassinations and the violent racial discord created by continuing Southern bigotry. For my National Park Service interpretation friends, trust me, a trip to Hitsville is worth it just to view the compelling interpretation skills of the guides. Someone needs to call whom ever is training these folks!!
