The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them. They - TopicsExpress

The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them. They brought the donkey and the colt and put on them their cloaks, and he sat on them. Most of the crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. And the crowds that went before him and that followed him were shouting, “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!” Matthew 21:6-9 The same group of people screaming "Hosanna to the Son of David" (and acknowledging Jesus as the Messiah in so doing) is the same group of people who will be yelling, "Let Him be crucified!" (Matt. 27:22) later in the same week, within days. Is this not the epitome of denying Jesus before man? The epitome of "trampling underfoot the blood of Christ" (Heb. 10:29)? How terrifying that this is the actual state of much of the church. They name Christ, but inwardly, when it comes down to it, they want nothing to do with His actual demands, and would rather see Him gone, than to truly come to repentance and faith. He came at a time when Israel and Jerusalem were in a state of apostasy, and they rejected and crucified Him. "He came to His own, and His own people did not receive Him" (John 1:11). And, it will be the same when He comes to claim the world His own in the second coming. He says, "Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?” (Luke 18:8). And it will be Him dealing out the judgment in that day. Not a cross, but a sword. We then, the Christian church, should "be all the more diligent to confirm our calling and election" (2 Pet. 2:10), that when the day comes, we do not hear, "depart from me, I never knew you."
