The first Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, has urged the National Identity Management Commission to ensure that all Nigerian women are enrolled into the National Identity Database, and also receive their new national e-ID cards. She spoke shortly after the Director General of NIMC, Chris Onyemenam, presented her with the card at the state house in Abuja. The first lady thereafter commended the commission for delivering her national e-ID card in record time. She however urged the commission to work judiciously to ensure that no woman was left behind in the enrolment for the National Identification Number and the issuance of the national e-ID card. According to her, the national e-ID card will enable someone to assert his/her identity as a Nigerian, asking the commission to ensure that the e-ID card reaches the grassroots and hinterlands. “NIMC must ensure that the distribution of the e-ID Card should reach all Nigerians particularly the women folk which is my primary constituency,” she said. She urged the NIMC to embark on a massive awareness and sensitisation campaigns in the rural areas in particular, and Nigeria at large, to further create awareness. The first lady also implored NIMC to ensure that the new national e-ID card was not faked, urging the commission to collaborate with the Nigerian Immigration Service to ensure that the national e-ID card complements the passport. “The NIMC must however collaborate with Nigerian Immigration Service, indeed the combination of the passport and the national e-ID card will help affirm the identity of any Nigerian,” she said. She added that the new card should be able to differentiate Nigerians from non-Nigerians and assist the security agencies fish out non- Nigerians who pose as Nigerians. Meanwhile, the National Identity Management Commission has clinched two awards in the 2014 National Information Technology Agency e-Governance awards programmes organised to evaluate all e-governance projects in the country. The award ceremony, which held in Abuja, saw NIMC receive the best runners-up awards in e-Governance and web presence out of the five categories. The NIMC said it was awarded the best runners-up in two categories – ‘Web presence’ and ‘e-Governance project’ – following an exhaustive jury and assessment process. “We are indeed excited by this merit,” he said. The Nigeria Customs Service received the first position in web presence while the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board received the best position in e-Governance project in the same category. posted on December 02, 2014 at 12:00AM jtnng.blogspot/
