The insane and brutal killing of 19 years young Arunachali student Nido Tania should jolt us to an unpleasant reality. There is a latent undercurrent of racialism in us. Instead of desperately staying in a state of denial, let us make conscious and concerted efforts to remove this negative strain. All political parties, student organisations, civil rights groups and others should separately or collectively demand immediate punitive action against perpetrators of the dastardly act of Tanias killing. There should be systemic efforts to restore confidence of north eastern persons staying in other parts of India. As a teacher for over 40 years in du I have seen the pain of n e students at being jeered, at their girls being considered easy prey, at their being different considered a slur on their character.We as Indians condemn racial discrimination abroad , but do not hesitate to subject our own people to such ignity. It us sad that the incident happened in the national capital so close to the national Republic Day. What is the use of raising nationalist and patriotic ceremonial slogans if we trample over the sentiments of people which are integral part of our nation. Let all of us work for instilling a sense of belonging among our n e citizens. Continued alienation will prove costly in future for the country. Let all of us think what I can do for promoting national integration- political, emotional, social and cultural. But today my head bows to a collective shame.
