The post I am write tonight is probably one of the most important I have ever written, so please do share it and read it to your own children. I had to go uptown to get a few things and ran into a mother who was in tears telling of how her daughter is being bullied at school. I asked how old she is, her mother replied 15. I said, Well you know 15 is an extremely hard age, nothing seems to ever go right, but if we just hang on it will pass and we get stronger So I walked away and thought to myself.......take that trip down memory lane again when you were 15 Mary George, so I did and the following is what I remember. At 15 years old I had a couple brothers who loved to get into trouble both with the law and within themselves. I vividly remember being in the girls room when I had to hear that one of my brothers got drunk, wrecked his car and it crashed on the railroad tracks in Keating. Followed by a I just dont understand those people, he could have done the world a favor and died!..........there I sat in the stall in the girls room feeling so paralyzed I could not move nor did I want to. I didnt want to confront face to face that mean person who knew that I was in the girls room, what did I do at 15? I sat there and wept. That was one isolated incident and believe me there were many, many more. At 15 I couldnt comprehend that maliciousness nor the cold calculated ways of anyone my own age. Why would someone want to so publicly humiliate me and wish my brother dead? I knew who the person was that was talking because she followed me into the girls room and she was also a classmate and a friend, so I thought. As I recall I went home that evening in tears as I did so many other times from school and just wanted to die from humiliation. I didnt realize it at that age but people such as that cold hearted, spiteful, mean spirited girl was actually doing me a huge favor. I was being picked on, bullied and taunted pretty much through all of high school in one way or another but in the end it made me stronger, more tolerant to others, and certainly kinder to most. Fortunately for me I could handle my emotions because I had a family whom I loved and I was so happy my brother didnt die in that wreck because he and I have been friends forever. I realized talking to that mother in the store that kids today are bullying but they use more sophisticated means to do that. Not only does a 15 year old today deal with it in school but they deal with it all in the social media, aka, facebook, twitter, etc. I pray that people reach out to their children and let them know that bullying is not acceptable and is not cool. It is the most cruel means to make someone feel less important, less pretty, less everything. We, as parents and grandparents need to take a stand and DEMAND that our children do not play the part of the brutalizing, taunting, teasing individual. We need to reinforce the fact that we are all IMPORTANT in this world, that NONE of us are more special than the other. Reach out to your children and tell them that they need to treat everyone as they would want to be treated themselves. Some are not as athletic as others, but I am sure they are great at art or music or something else. Some are not as beautiful as their fellow student but I guarantee their hearts are probably as beautiful if not more so than that photogenic star athlete. Physical characteristics are NOTHING unless you have the heart and the personality to go with it. As my mother used to say, you can carry your beauty...gee what did she mean? For the 15 year old sitting there at home feeling inadequate, not important walk over to the mirror and take a good hard look at your beautiful self. Look not with YOUR eyes but with your mothers eyes and I will be the first to tell you that you are the MOST important, MOST beautiful and MOST loved person in this world. After all you one of Gods special children and in His eyes you are very, very important!
