The struggles of “Atheism” Appendix: Remembrance I previously wrote two parts on the struggles of Atheism, solidarity and death, and thought that that was the end of my thoughts. But then I realized that for many of us that die, or dying, intellectually it is a lonely death. Many of us are forced, without our consent (many of us don’t make a will, do it!), to be a part of religious ceremonies. Perhaps at death we don’t mind, and whatever ceremony occurs, only serves to comfort those we leave behind. This post is not to get into some discourse and grievance in regards to our funerals, but to tell you, my fellow atheists, that in your moment of death, or when you have passed on, your legacy lives on. When you have passed on, we won’t tell you you’re with angels, with god, with your loved ones, or that you’re merely now worm food. We won’t glorify any ceremonies of burial or cremation, nor will we even know your name. Know this, we the rational thinkers: When your children encounter us, they will be treated with the utmost respect When your children encounter us, their freedoms will be respected and fought for When your children encounter us, you can be sure they will be protected We will continue to fight for what you stood for We will fight for a world you can be proud of We are nameless and exist in all races, cultures, occupations, and titles We will continue your legacy as a rational thinker, and behave proudly as one You, are a unique culmination from the trillions upon trillions of stardust that created who you are, an improbable possibility that existed, and may exist again, in a distant future, in a distant possibility. This, is a solidarity we can offer you. This, is a tie that you won’t ever lose. We will fight in your name, whether you are a Hitchens or a nameless soul.
