There is a big problem with this thinking; it no longer really applies and assumes on a national level the GOP wants to be a true opposition party and we have no place else to go politically. The Ds have been taken over by radicals who rely on thier base to be blind to their real agenda, disengaged from the political process until they are told how to vote, and then dependent on them for everything to include food in the end. The Rs on a national leadership level have taken the role of giant gov, and unfortunelty too often, socialist enablers by supporting the Ds by not fighting back and abusing those who are serious about the path of destruction we are on. The Rs depend on demeaning the Ted Cruzs and hoping in the end that conservatives have no place else to go on election day. They are no more interested in having a coalition with us as the Ds are with them. Mostly, its becuase they are blind to the dangers we really face. Ds, who are no longer Ds, but socialists at best, will negotiate nothing but our transformation (destruction) and the National leadership Rs expect us to go along peacefullly and trust them to fight next time. That thinking got us to a 17 trillion $ debt, nationalized healthcare, nationalized banking (Dood_Frank), nationalized housing (Freddy/Fanny), nationalized education and a system so out of touch that the Prez can order the US PArk service to hold senior citizens at gun point for being in a national park when the Prez decides to close it and hardly a whimper is heard from the opposition party. We DO have other places to go politically; we can support candidates to understand and are willing to fight the socilaist take over of America and we have many even here in Colroado. If the GOP leadership nationally (and locally in some cases) wants to join that coalition, well be happy to have them come along.
