Throwback Thursday! Ernest F. Coe came to Miami in 1925 and loved exploring this subtropical landscape. Coe was alarmed at the birds and orchids being poached and in 1928, he wrote to the first Director of the National Park Service, Stephen Mather, outlining a proposal for a new national park in south Florida. Coes original vision for Everglades National Park was much larger in size than what was actually established in 1947, and he felt his efforts had failed. In fact he almost did not attend the dedication ceremony! While numerous people and organizations campaigned for the establishment of this park, we owe much credit to the relentless efforts of Ernest F. Coe.
