To all the women out there! A must read! 2014 Dr Rowena A new study was just published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine. For women over the age of 30 exercise is key in preventing heart disease. Yes controlling blood pressure is important but being active offers even more protection. Being active lowers your risk even more than having a normal weight. In other words, start walking. It is easier to pile stuff on the stairs and only make one trip in the future but not as good for your heart. This study just looked at women. Medicine is finally learning that women are different from men. Interestingly, for women under the age of 30 smoking is the biggest risk factor. In my opinion this makes sense. Under 30 most women are likely more active. Many are in school and many chase small children. The dating scene leads to dancing and sporting activities. Since they are active the need for exercise is not as great. Smoking would be the biggest unneeded risk to their health. As you age you tend to become less active because the demands on your time are different. Health problems are more likely to be present, such as arthritis that make exercise more difficult. I used to find Jane Fonda workout videos a piece of cake. Now that I am well over 30, the same video would kill me. Interestingly in her latest yoga video, Jane Fonda features 10 minute segments rather than the hour long workouts of her past. For me this new study correlates with a study published in by the American Medical Association in 2011 which showed that older people who naturally walk faster live longer. Gait is a predictor of longevity and exercise protects older women from heart disease. The message is clear. Women need to make regular exercise a part of their lifestyle. If you make exercise a habit when you are young, the same habit will help protect your heart as you get older. You do not have to exercise as vigorously but you still need to move.
