Today, Ambassador Marie Gervais-Vidricaire visited the section of the Berlin Wall left standing at Niederkirchnerstraße. As part of the exhibits regarding the fall of the Wall, she read the fascinating story of John Runnings, a Canadian peace activist. Mr. Runnings, who passed away in 2004, visited Berlin on several occasions to engage in nonviolent forms of protest, such as distributing leaflets and writing slogans on the Wall. In 1986, at the age of 69, he became known as the “Wall Walker” after climbing the barrier and walking along the concrete piping at the top. That same year, he spent three months in prison in East Germany. As we mark the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Wall, we remember the courage and sacrifice of those who stood up for democracy and human dignity. #fotw25 #fallofthewall25 #bln25yearslater
