Today I wanted to say something about Baby Naka..gulp..for the first time since his death. Its something important, something that may help ease the pain of losing him. :( Its very difficult. I wanted to find one picture, one perfect picture of him but there are so many, in so many different albums. I would like to move all of them into one album...the comments too. But I cannot do it all in one day. So I will post what I wanted to say... Briefly...KaPa and her newborn baby Naka arrived at FAE January 2013. For those of you who dont know, Nakas mother rejected him at birth, she would not feed him and tried to kill him. They were brought to FAE separately. He had been sold to a temple and the owner waited for Naka to gain strength. To be a slave in a temple is probably the worst possible life for an elephant. As we watched him grow we loved him more and more, we always knew he might have to go to the temple even as Soraida fought for him. Soraida managed to fight off the bad men as long as she could. Before the dreaded day arrived, Baby Naka became ill and unexpectedly, he died. It was a horror and a blessing, something Ill never be able to resolve in my mind. I was telling Jill Li how I still could not look at pictures of Baby Naka or even read his name without bursting into tears. Jill said Ive come across a photo or two every now and then... and in my case, he makes me smile... those eyes!! For my mind, he had a mission...a special mission... to touch so many people from all over the world and make them smile, too. To crawl into the very being of others, Sanya, you, Soraida for instance and bring great joy and attention to the plight of the Temple elephant and this peculiar Elephant Herpes virus that takes too many babies. And finally, when I remember that vulture standing over his grave, etc. well then I cry all over again...he is a soul that will never be forgotten. Thank you, Jill Li
