This long bright day is coming to an end Sun moving inexorably toward the sea As if thirsty in its heat and sweat Hurrying now to reach its destination. All an illusion The bright orb is going nowhere This tired world spins toward darkness The sun will never drink from the sea. But my eyes see what they must see And it is an ending from any perspective The morning a distant memory Its twin rainbows an impossible dream. The ticking of time is marked by music A lone saxophone player down the beach Playing a jazz song of lost love Perfect background for the losing of the light. The little distant clouds turn more pink Then more red And then the golden highway appears Leading to that distant meeting across the waves. Now I can literally see the sun move The Earth spins fast near the equator Winds which filled the sails all day long Hush and stand silent as if watching too. Then the mighty sun disappears But in its place an ethereal greenish glow The far horizon pulses mystical gold A light unlike any other, then darkness. The sky, the wisps of cloud quickly fade Another day of life has ended In this tiny corner of the world There will be drinking and partying tonight. Yet I am stuck as a statue in the sand An hour later and the sky full of stars And I am still here filled with wonder How many miracles have I missed? Why did I allow myself to be blinded?
