USING MOTIVATION AND REINFORCEMENT TO INTRODUCE NEW FOODS Im so pleased that little man ate his first full bowl of oats porridge! I didnt prepare a lot of porridge as it was the first time he was trying it. I used motivation and two different schedules of reinforcement for his behaviour of eating porridge: - a fixed ratio (FR1)- where I reinforced each spoonful with a preferred food (banana) and - a variable interval (VI)- where he received the iPad after a short time, as long as he remained eating porridge :). It is variable because, unlike with the pieces of banana following each spoonful, he couldnt predict when he was getting the ipad. When using both schedules I was careful not to ask too much of him so we could keep going nicely with just about the right amount of reinforcement. We aim to increase the number of spoon fulls for each piece of banana and for access to the ipad, until he can finish a full bowl before he can have a banana and we can fade the iPad eventually. Double reinforcement has paid off!!! He finished the whole bowl and he was happy and proud. A lot of social reinforcement was used too. He is an awesone boy! P.S. This was a major achievement for little man as I tried to introduce porridge before without success, however, I was not using reinforcement correctly. He is fed up with pancakes for breakfast and we run out of alternatives, therefore it is important for his overall health that he increases his breakfast options. Im so pleased I am now able to tweak with the bits of knowledge Im learning in uni to help my little man in between consultant visits... Happy, happy mum!!!
