Up late with this selection from the Mike Patrick Film - TopicsExpress

Up late with this selection from the Mike Patrick Film Library. Its the best work of both Mickey Rourke and Eric Roberts, both of whoms careers undeservedly went straight into the toilet after this and rarely came up for air (Mickey in Barfly and Eric in King of the Gypsies notwithstanding (and I am aware, Joe Meyers, that King of the Gypsies is six years older than this film, but its the only other Eric Roberts film worth watching)). You all know I love movies that are Valentines to New York, and theres plenty of lovely location shooting on display here (though not much of what I remember Greenwich Village being when I was a Village rat in 1984. Wheres the Unique Boutique?). Unfortunately, The Pope of Greenwich Village cant decide whether its a mafioso crime drama or dark comedy, and that indecision leads it to completely fall down in the end. But hey, on the way its a fun ride of Shatneresque method acting from Rourke and Roberts, a jazzy score by Dave Grusin, and Daryl Hannah strips down to her undies, so theres that, too. Hey-yo. Hello there. Worth a Netflix, says me.
