VIBRIO CHOLERAE Classification: BacteriaDefinition:Vibrio cholerae is a Gram-negative, capable of respiratory and fermentative metabolism. The bacterium is oxidase-positive, reduces nitrate, and is motile by means of a single, sheathed, polar flagellum. It produce cholera toxin hoe action on the mucosal epithelium i responsible for the characteristic diarrhea of the disease cholera .Cultural Characteristics: Vibrio cholerae growing on thiosulphate citrate bile salt sucrose (TCBS) agar plates Physiological Characteristics: The bacterium is non-spore-forming curved rod, 1- 3 µm by 0.5-0.8 µm Moisture Requirement: Optimum aw 0.984 (0.5% NaCl). Range aw 0.940-0.988 (0.1-4.0% NaCl). Does not require the presence of salt for growth. Sensetive to drying.Temperature Requirement: Temperature: Optimum 37oC. Range 10-43oC. Survives better under refrigeration than at ambient temperatures. Also survives freezing.Oxygen Requirement: Aerobic and Facultative AnearobicpH Requirement:Optimum 7.6. Range 5.0-9.6. The organism can grow relatively quickly under optimum conditions.Found in:Places with inadequate water treatment, poor sanitation, and inadequate hygiene. Live in the environment in brackish rivers and coastal waters.
