Very proud to share Canadian journalist/fellow J School alum Nadja Drosts recent story on gold mining in Colombia in The Atavist. Two years ago, she set out to find out how a gold rush was fueling the armed conflict and went to a town where a war over territory and gold mines was brewing between two militia groups. As she returned to the town over the next year and a half and watched the town buckle under violence, she found at its center the story of a rich gold mine, the grisly massacre of its owners and a shadowy local capo.
