Higher National Certificates (HNCs) and Higher National Diplomas (HNDs) are undergraduate qualifications. They are vocational and designed to equip you with specific skills in your chosen subject area. What is the difference between a HNC and HND? AN HNC can take one year to complete full-time or two years to complete part-time – it’s generally equivalent to the first year of a university course. An HND is the next step up – generally equivalent to the second year of a university course. An HND can take two years to complete studying full-time or three years part-time. What can I do after an HNC or HND? You have a few options: You can pursue your chosen career with your newly acquired knowledge and skills. If you’re already employed you can apply your new skills and knowledge to enhance your career prospects. You can top up your qualification to a full honours degree at university. If you have achieved an HND you should be able to secure a place at university on the third year of a degree course – this means only one year of university fees! I work full-time.
