We are very close to the end of my fathers artistic tour of Hertford, Ware and surrounds (do I hear sighs of relief or are they moans of sadness?) but I have a couple more out of sequence paintings that I have found (although I suspect more may surface periodically!) before were completely done. Todays painting carries on nicely from Darren Joness delightfully seasonal cover photo of Bull Plain. Just to the left of the red brick building in the photo, the road goes over the bridge to Folly Island, and it is that bridge which is depicted in the painting. I had almost ruled out this painting as being of that location (it is yet another unidentified!!), and comparison with the current Google Streets image almost confirmed it for me, as the parapet of the bridge in the painting is very different from what is currently present, not to mention the different buildings in the background; that the pavement is considerably higher; and there is a distinct central gutter not now centrally present. Then I noticed the gas lamp still present on the Google Maps image... That caused me to remember that someone had mentioned here that the bridge had had some work done to it in the moderately distant past, and then I also looked closer at Google Maps and saw that the gutter although not central does still exist (slightly). What this painting is then, is an older one (borne out also by his style which changed over the years as many will have noticed) which I suspect dates from the 1960s or even 1950s - perhaps someone can estimate it more closely based upon the older bridge style and the buildings in the background? - but it is indeed the bridge from Bull Plain over the Lea to Folly Island, Hertford.
