We made it ! Alaska was brief, very wet and wonderful. It got progressively colder as we went north so we decided to abandon the hike to Anchorage and went instead to Haines, a small town about 5 hours down the coast from Anchorage. It was spectacular scenery all the way from Haines Junction where we stayed for one night in what must have been the most run down and expensive hotel room we ever had. Paint peeling off the wall in the bath room, the shower too small to turn around in and the beds were at right angles to each other because there really wasn’t enough room to have them side by side. Still we relished the warm room, the hot shower and the kids delighted in the free wifi. We all slept like babies and woke to about 2 inches of snow – lovely! Haines had a lovely atmosphere to it, small townish, cut off from the rest of the world, Whitehorse is about 5 hours away but the people seemed self contained and happy. We stayed just out of town at a great campsite, The Salmon Run , where we meet Micah almost 3, Bella, 5 and Noah, 5 months. Micah decided I must be a grandma so we were bff’s in less than 10 minutes. I’d forgotten how lovely small children can be. We spent the first day trying to do some work in the great lounge they had, wood stove included, but mostly I played with Micah and Bella while Tess hung out with baby Noah and enjoyed being an impromptu baby sitter. TJ and Danielle were from Texas and were running the campground for the summer. Nice job to have and then they get to go home when it gets too cold. We spent most of the three days with them and had a blast. I was sorry to say goodbye but we promised to visit if we are any where near them when we get to Texas. Micah will remain in my memory though, full of life, a good little boy and so sweet into the bargain. We left Haines in the rain and headed north across the pass, not so much snow but bitter cold. We are now going east to Watson Lake then south to camp for a couple of days, weather permitting so that Brendan can get some much awaited fishing done before we head on back to Sedro Woolley. Missing Kate the past few days so I’ll be glad to grab hold of her and give her a hug soon. Heres some pics of the scenery on the way up - talk soon
