Welcome Lady Katherine! Heres a video so you can get a better view and squee appropriately. :) https://vimeo/116818697 This little sprite is surely on of the luckiest weezils weve ever met! Katherine was found by a Samaritan at 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday night. He found this wayward weezil in a snow bank, unable to move and barely alive. Think about that: how long can an immobile ferret lay in snow on a freezing night before freezing to death? Surely Katherine was near the end when she was found! The Samaritan kept her overnight and called Animal Control yesterday. Fortunately we just happen to know Sterling Heights AC Officer Kim and she was able to get Katherine transferred to Motor City Ferrets. When I first met Katherine I didnt know what to make of her condition. I was concerned enough to run her right out to see Dr. Frank Carmona at North Hills Veterinary Hospital in Rochester, the best vet clinic east of the Mississippi - especially because we knew Doc C. was on his way out of town for a conference! Doc C and Joyce looked her over and we were all a little confused with what we found. Poor girl cant close her mouth all the way just now. She has angry bruises all over her back and she cant walk either. Xrays showed that she has no fractures, but her jaw is swollen out of alignment and she has several compressed vertebrae. We thought perhaps a larger animal got hold of her and caused the damage, but we couldnt find any tell-tale bruises left by canine teeth. So what in the world happened to this little gal? Doc C prescribed anti-inflammatory meds, as well as a round of antibiotics for technical reasons. Also, she shouldnt move much, so right now shes tucked away into a small travel size cage. Of course were offering mushie since its probably going to be tough - and painful - for her to eat regular food. Last night she slept quite a bit, but we might have already seen some progress. Her travel cage is only about two feet long. Shes tucked into some blankets on one end, then I have paper towel at the other end for her to potty. Earlier in the day she just pottied where she was laying, but several times last night she was able to get up, make it over to the paper towel, turn around and assume the proper position. Unfortunately she wasnt able to pee on her own, so we had to help her with some squeezing. On squeezing: years ago we had a little gal called Bridgette. She came to us when she was about one, and she had a ruptured disk in her lumbar region - same region where Katherine has similar damage. Bridgette could poop, but she couldnt pee on her own. So we squeezed her a couple of times a day to help. Also, Bridgettes legs didnt work correctly. She used them to help motor about, but they couldnt give her any lift. Good news is that Bridgette lived to be an oooold lady and she had a very happy life! And last night, while I was gently moving Katherines fur about to see the extent of the bruising to her back, I did end up finding two tell-tale canine teeth marks. And as you can see in the video, when our pup Arya came near Katherine panicked! So now the clues point towards a larger critter getting hold of her at some point, doing some damage with at least one bite, and then that critter probably dropped Katherine where she was found, on the snow bank. Also, Doc C thought perhaps the injury to her jaw was caused while she was fighting back against whatever critter had hold of her. Katherine is very young, so we have high hopes for her to make a full recovery. Stay tuned! :)
