============= Well, I have noted that highly educated and highly paid folks mouthing off for a living have a problem referring to themselves as me. At first I noted that it was usually when the me should have appeared as the object of a preposition. Then I heard that it happened every time when the me should have appeared to complete the preposition between. That led to noting that it happened every time when the object of the preposition was compound. He flirts with both you and I. They sent an invitation to Mary and I. But then, I observed* it was just that these egoists (which nearly everyone described above is) should be using the objective case but cannot bear to think of themselves objectively. They are just flabby grammarians. There is something pretentious about it. They seldom use the subjunctive mood when they should; yet they use the subjunctive do unnecessarily. Women (who sense they might be ignored all the time.) They do not understand the two uses of compound personal pronouns and use them when personal pronouns will do. The uses: 1. When the same person is in the expression a previous time: I patted myself on the back. 2. for emphsis: Ill tell her myself, thank you. I believe that grammar should reflect what is being done; so it looks as though what you cite by the Harvard pundit may be correct. I think it has something to do with a linguistic philosophy about language. The verb assists shall and will got shifted way back when, until any logical distinction for which was used was completely muddled. One was originally for emphasis of intent. People used it so often that the it showed no emphasis and the other one suggested emphasis. Related: How do you respond to woke and woken, which seem to me to predominate today? I feel a bit embarrassed that I cant get on board with what I assume is Anglo-Saxon oriented and I always use awakened. * I am bothered by using observed for what I notice by listening. Is there a word for that? ============ I just think this is thrilling, thats all.
