Well hayfever season is upon us and if you are one of the unfortunate ones who suffers greatly through this period there are non-medication ways of dealing with it, but it may take a bit of work re-training your immune system. Basically my understanding is that there are two sides to our immune systems, Th1 and Th2. VERY simply stating it (and I mean VERY, this is an extremely complex topic) if you are Th1 dominant you will suffer from the big ticket items such as autoimmune diseases and if Th2 is dominant youll be more prone to the allergic type diseases such as asthma, rhinitis, hayfever and the like. This is why you often find disease clusters such as asthma, eczema and hayfever in the same person. The only real options medicinally are asthma preventers, puffers, anti-histamine tablets or steroid type meds and none of these are things you really want to be on long term. They can cause long term weakening of the mucosal linings and depletion of important minerals such as magnesium which, unfortunately, is one of the major minerals needed to actually help the airways relax and function well (as luck would have it!). As I say, it takes a while to re-train the immune system but it is something well worth undertaking, especially if it is your children who are suffering from it. Simple things such as vitamin C, omega 3s, specific strains of probiotics, medicinal mushrooms and various different herbs can go a long way to re-balancing the system and there are other things you can do to alleviate symptoms as well. Something well worth considering.
