When I interviewed James Rosenquist in 2008 I asked him - TopicsExpress

When I interviewed James Rosenquist in 2008 I asked him point-blank if he was comfortable with being labeled as a Pop artist by art critics. Rosenquist replied, They called me a Pop artist because I used recognizable imagery. The critics like to group people together. I didnt meet Andy Warhol until 1964. I did not really know Andy or Roy Lichtenstein that well. We all emerged separately.. Needless to say, it is not as if Rosenquist wakes up every morning saying, Im a Pop artist -- to him it is simply a label that he has been stamped with. Rosenquist, now 79 years old, is stuck with that label no matter what direction he takes with his current artwork. theartedge.faso/blog/68188/thinking-back-on-james-rosenquist-and-vito-acconci-concerning-how-artists-are-labeled-by-art-critics
