Why Shagari was Not Detained---From Nigerian Internet Fora This is such blessed folly! The criminals were the coup plotters. They should be asked, why they have not been prosecuted for their crimes. Whom they illegally detained or set free, for whatever reason is completely irrelevant. The other part of this, which refers to the treasonable felon, General Buhari as a non-involved party is also quite disingenuous. He was involved, because he became an illegal head of state, as a result of the military mutiny. I thank you. Fubara David-West. On Saturday, January 10, 2015 9:04 PM, edwin emenike I think a lot of Yoroba elder statesman were in that prison with different illness, most were denied treatment even though the tribunal could not find anything to convict them with, some were tried three times, four times, and when the were found not guilty of any crime were still left in prison without the ability to get adequate medical treatment. But Shagari was at his house where his doctors had free access to him. UNCLE SAM IS NOT ONLY IN AMERICA. Now I see Yoruba has one. Adeniyi!!!. (okonkwonetworks@googlegroups) Add cleanup rule | More info WHY SHAGARI WAS NOT DETAINED IN PRISON AFTER 1983 COUP By Tola Adeniyi A lot of tongues have been wagging and many uninformed commentators have continued to question Buhari’s impartiality as to why Vice President Alex Ekwueme was detained in prison while Shagari was detained in his house under House arrest. For those who were mature enough in 1983/84 and were knowledgeable enough about the politicians of the era, the state of Shagari’s health was common knowledge. President Shehu Shagari was thought to be terminally ill at the time as he was alleged to suffer from Tuberculosis of the marrow. Tuberculosis of the marrow is a rare disease that kills about 2 million people annually worldwide. Medical reports, according to Military hospital sources indicated that Shagari might die in prison. Military authorities did not want any death as a fall-out of the coup that swept NPN out of power. The Coup planners, which did not include General Muhammadu Buhari, led by General Bako who died in the putsch, had wanted their coup to remain bloodless. It was therefore resolved that any of the politicians considered acutely ill should be put under arrest. Incidentally, Shagari was not the only politician imprisoned in their homes. abiodun KOMOLAFE, AMNIM,
