Why do people have to DO something other than write a check? Everyone loves to laugh at the Ice Bucket Challenge (and rightly so!)... But marathons, folding paper cranes, all sorts of things where people pay someone to suffer in order to end suffering. What is it about that? Why cant you take those 36 hours youd spend endurance watching a Honeymooners marathon or whatever inanity it is and instead put that time into earning some actual money and donate it too? Its not really the fault, of course, of the motivated individuals who do these things... its the fault of the other people who wont give money without something other than the cause. I remember a while ago donating (and believe you me, three years unemployed, were talking about a MODEST donation) to some local charity, and they wanted to know if I wanted the t-shirt or the coffee mug. I said to keep the money for the cause and basically their answer was that it was cheaper for them to send me a gift than the administrative costs of NOT sending me something.
