Yesterday, Matt took Bob out to a local dog park to let him run in an enclosed area. You know, safely. Except when they got there, and Matt let Bob out of the truck, Bob freaked out for whatever reason and slipped out of his collar. Then Bob started to run and explore and jump through the tall weeds like he was some sort of gazelle. He was having so much fun! The problem was, they werent inside the fenced area yet. Bob took off through the trails of Kishwauketoe running and circling back and running off again.... and then he stopped circling back. And Matt spent two hours trying to figure out where he went. And then it got dark. So he had to stop looking. At 1:40am we got a call from the police department. They received a call and wondered if maybe it was Bob that had been hit and killed almost three miles away, on a country road... and it seemed as if Bob was trying to make his way home. They sent a picture via text with the most incredible sensitivity and compassion Ive ever experienced. I thank the kind police officer for that. I decided I cant do any more death. Seriously. Ill have no more of it for at least the next 12 months. I also decided that Bobs last day was probably one of his most favorite. Running free and exploring and being wild with no one yelling at him to come back and lock him on a leash. I have to keep telling myself that. Because I really miss this little guy.
