Yet another post on Ken Gillingss Bush & Battlefield Tours Facebook Page today (feel free to visit it at absolutely no cost!); the 115th anniversary of the second Battle of Black Week - Magersfontein, south of Kimberley. I detailed account of the battle appears in the above, but to whet your appetites, here are some photos. They show the model in the Interpretive Centre on the Battlefield of the Highland Brigade about to be engaged by General Piet Cronjes burghers entrenched along the base of Magersfontein Kop, the two commanders (Lt Gen Lord Methuen and Gen Piet Cronje - although the idea of entrenching along the foot of the hills was that of General Koos de la Rey, the memorial to Maj Gen Andy Wauchope (the commander of the Highland Brigade, who was killed in the Battle) at Matjiesfontein, hundreds of km south of the battlefield, a photo of a section of the Boer trench (although the trenches were considerably extended after the battle) and piper Ramon Allan playing the lament at the Burgher memorial. A truly eerie battlefield, well worth a visit with the best interpretive centre on site in South Africa - the work of Facebook friend Garth Benneyworth and Fiona Barbour from Kimberley.
