You know, I very seldom watch Dr. Phil because he pisses me off so - TopicsExpress

You know, I very seldom watch Dr. Phil because he pisses me off so bad, but I have Channel 6 on here most of the day as background noise because it pleases Trinket. (She actually watches TV. Yes, honestly, and we make certain to only put on non-threatening programs because she does not like battle scenes, people screaming, etc.) That being said, this afternoon the program is about OCD. I have always had a mild case of OCD, going back to my cousins death when I was 13, and so I was halfway listening today where I normally phase it out. However, something Dr. Phil said, during this program, rang a bell for me: body dismorphia. I have always believed I was the ugly sister, although of course I dont really care about it to the extreme that this young lady does; I simply accept that my sister got the looks in our family. No big deal. The guys I dated have always vehemently disagreed, but then what are they going to say? If they want to get laid they are going to tell you that you are the most beautiful girl they know; doesnt make it true LOL. However, listening to this program, I hearken back to when I was in school, and so many of the girls who were very attractive thought they were ugly. I remember looking at them and thinking, damn she is so much prettier than I am and SHE thinks she is hideous; what does that say about me? And, why cant she see how pretty she is? It makes me wonder: How many of our young girls (and probably boys too) go through life thinking they are ugly, with all the self esteem issues that raises, because of our societys obsession with perfection and beauty, and with comparing ourselves to beauty ideals that are frankly unattainable for more than a fraction of the populace no matter how much make up they apply or how extremely they may diet? How many people actually have a degree of body dismorphia, never seeing beauty in the mirror but endlessly obsessing about how they fail to measure up? :/
