from our newsletter subscribe at newjerseymassage THE 10,000 HOUR RULE! by Larry Heisler, M.A., LMT When i was growing up there was only one person that played like Jimi Hendrix or Eric Clapton, now on every corner, in every major city there are hundreds, if not thousands of kids that routinely play at their level. The fact is we are getting better at everything we do and I believe we are getting a lot smarter as well. I know sometimes its hard to tell that but as we get healthier by eating a plant based diet, as we meditate regularly, exercise, take vitamins, eat organic, etc., we will begin to transform and eventually see the light. In 2008, Canadian author and journalist Malcolm Gladwell penned a book called, Outliers: The Story of Success. Gladwell put forth the notion that expertise can be measured by the number of hours an individual gets to practice their specific subject. While i think we can all cite glaring exceptions to any hard and fast rule in this regard, neurologist Daniel Levitin states, The emerging picture from such studies is that ten thousand hours of practice is required to achieve the level of mastery associated with being a world-class expert-in anything. According to Outliers author Malcolm Gladwell, 10,000 hours of hard practice is roughly equivalent to ten years of study. He believes ten thousand hours is the magic number for greatness and in his book he presents the science to support his hypothesis. Thats quite a commitment. Ten thousand hours of teaching, ten thousand patients, ten thousand exercise classes, ten thousand hours of plumbing, you get the idea. In this day and age when folks have so many options and distractions, 10,000 hours can seem like a daunting task. The advice I give my students is to focus specifically on the areas that deeply inspire and uplift you and the time will just fly by. This idea is quite common in the Orient. Dont call yourself a Tai Chi instructor until you have the requisite number of hours under your belt, otherwise its just phony baloney. And remember, 10,000 hours is just to become a consummate professional, not even a master. So if 10,000 hours makes you a fully qualified professional, it takes 25,000 hours to become a Master and 35,000 or more hours to call yourself a Grandmaster. When I was studying traditional barefoot shiatsu in the early 1970s, I studied with the great Macrobiotic master, Michio Kushi. One day he took me aside and said Larry, when you have treated around 20,000 people, folks could just sit in the same room with you and your energy will be so powerful that they will start the healing process. Now that I have given over 50,000 massage therapy sessions, Im always on the look-out for miraculous things to happen. While theres no doubt Im doing the best healing bodywork of my life, the healing and inspiration folks receive are more from my loving support and encouragement than from the symptomatic relief from their aches and pains. Kushi always reminded us that encouraging folks to transform their world spiritually, psychologically and especially nutritionally was much more powerful than simply getting rid of their symptoms. He said symptomatic medicine was the lowest form of healing practiced. So while I can treat your arthritis, your headaches and your lower back pain very effectively with say trigger point therapy, if I can inspire you to change your lifestyle and especially your diet the results will be much more profound, life- changing. So ten thousand hours for me is entry level and this doesnt mean there arent extraordinarily gifted people that can almost be exceptional from the get go but it does mean that you should look at an individuals expertise in any subject whatsoever in terms of how long they have immersed themselves in that area, how much study they have undertaken, how much experience they have. Otherwise you are just getting opinions and everyone has opinions. So the next time someone calls themselves a Master or gives you a definitive opinion about any subject whatsoever, unless they have put in the time, youll know when they are fibbing even if they believe it themselves. and now for two IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS Its spring, time to break up the winter hardness in your muscles with a couple of great deep tissue medical massages.
