(heart in mouth as I click Post) Observation: Is it just me or does Bendigo and its businesses love a bandwagon? Most of you know I love a coffee and the experience of sitting at a cafe reading the paper,but.... at the moment, it seems to be a coffee-driven economy. Everyone is selling coffee, some businesses are doing so even if it means diversifying from their core business. After a well-documented and celebrated cultural food growth spurt from 2012-2013, I think perhaps Bendigo has hit a flat spot. Maybe people should watch the 6pm news less. Maybe read more? In any case - be original, be daring... or if youre not creative, (and I guess the main message to be taken out of this commentary is that most of Bendigo isnt) take some cheat notes from what is happening in Melbourne or New York, for example. Youve already taken a brave punt by opening your own business. But the gamble doesnt stop there. And then theres beer. Even though Bendigo Beer has been around for nearly 4 years, teaching venues about the tangible business benefits (and by this I mean making more $ margin!) of supporting Australian-owned and made beers, the lack of testicular fortitude by some to apply the same values they place on their wine and food offerings as they do to their beer list is, at times, extremely frustrating. Luckily, I move on pretty quick and continue to fight the good fight. Despite my observation I am an eternal optimist, I assure you ;)
