I started the meeting with some comments on the results of yesterday’s district and provincial council elections. The only voters who took part in the vote were the approximately 11,000 commune councillors currently in office. The balance of power of 8,000 pro-CPP councillors versus 3,000 pro-CNRP councillors is the result of the commune council elections that took place in June 2012, at a time when the CNRP was not formed yet. But since the CNRP was formed in July 2012, it has enjoyed a growing and overwhelming popular support. In spite of widespread cheating by the CPP/NEC at the July 2013 national elections, the CNRP collected a majority of votes in more than 700 communes among the largest ones (out of 1,633 communes in total). On the basis of the popular support expressed in July 2013, the CNRP would now control more commune councillors than the CPP (this is to be confirmed at the next commune council elections scheduled for February 2017).
