118 DAYS IN A SAMBISA HELL...SILENCE IS A CRIME..(Please Share) We were having some after-meeting (BBOG sit-out) gist, when Florence and I discussed, briefly and in passing, what was on Jesus’ mind when He commanded that ‘Love your neighbour AS yourself. The word ‘AS’ got me really thinking because I realize that the depth of love I am able to show others is a function of the depth with which I love myself. Then I remembered that I truly cannot give what I don’t have. What I give is what I have. So I asked myself: who really is my neighbor? The person who lives next door? Naaah!!! I realize that current happenstances around the world are depictions of the erroneous perception of who a neighbour is. It is how a rich see a poor; a black see white; a government see its people. It is about a Palestinian seeing an Israelite as an enemy and not a neighbour. It is reflected in how Yorubas see Igbos; how a member of Boko Haram see others as traitors. It is how the healthy see the sick; how the ‘free’ see the bond, how the married see singles, how religious leaders see their followers; how an employer see an employee; how a professional see a Receptionist, and how a master see his/her maid. Then it made sense to me, albeit painfully, how many people carry on with dismissive denial and uncaring disposition because they are unable to see the abducted Chibok girls as ‘neighbours’. The world begins to change when we start seeing another person, far or near, as a neighbour regardless of nationalism, beliefs, colour, tribe, culture, religion, or political affiliations. -Bukky Shonibare Please #BringBackOurGirls, now and alive...
