201306-14-0900 Black Forest Fire Press Conference Sheriff Makita - Very encouraging last night than previous nights. - Made some tremendous gains as far as structure protection. - Initially, no reports of looting/burglaries last night. - Animal rescue group working through the night to locate ranging animals. - 38,000 people impacted - 93000 acres affected - 1300-1500 acres burns - Active investigation on cause and origin on fire: 444-8393 tip line; blackforestfiretipline@elpasoco - Preliminary assessment: 7000 homes still need to be surveyed. - Volunteers : incident command, sheriff’s office, tip lines, other offices behind the scenes are helping greatly Containment area is looking better, but until it’s tested we won’t improve the number. Type I Team Incident Commander Rich Harvey - Firefighters had a good night. - Took about 45 calls from security calls that identified hotspots that saved structures. - Dozer lines, hand lines, and back-burns were effective - No loss of structures - Very cognizant of weather for today ... cautious is the optimism for the day. - Strategy for the day: Inside/outside approach -- High Forest area is a priority (west side of fire) -- Grassy areas are protected rather well -- North flank on the east side is very hot -- Meridian Road is holding strong -- South Central is looking good, but watching carefully -- Aviation assets the same as yesterday Lt. Commissioner Daryl Glenn Community meeting at Lewis-Palmer High School , open meeting at 10 a.m. to noon - Emergency preparedness issues - Get folks together and find out if there are issues they can help with. City Fire Chief Tommy Smith - CSFD and CSPD are on duty doing brand patrol, security, and fire mitigation. City Councilman Joel Miller District 2 - City residents: barricades and patrols are guarding the evacuated neighborhoods. - Elected officials are engaged, and supporting county staff. - Thanks to the first responders and to the community members who’ve opened their homes. - CS Utilities helping regulate and safety the utility systems.
