22 October 1972: Robin John Bell, 21-year-old Protestant, single, a farmer and part-time UDR member holding the rank of Private was murdered in the car his father was driving when it was ambushed by the IRA. Pte Bell, his brother and father were going to an out-farm that was owned by the family and located on Lough Erne at Drumquillagh. Around 8:00AM they were going down a narrow lane leading to the Galloon Farm. Three men were hiding behind a hedge near the bridge that led to the island and opened fire. Pte Bell was the front seat passenger. He and his father were both hit. His brother escaped injury. Pte Bells brother was an off-duty UDR member and returned fire with his legally held pistol but failed to hit any of the attackers. Mr Bell was hit in the arm but managed to drive to the farm and raise the alarm. Pte Bell was taken to hospital where he later died. LEST WE FORGET!
